Here's what today's DAILY MAIL has to say on the subject:

'Eating more fish could give you a bigger brain - and even protect against Alzheimer's, it is claimed. People with higher levels of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil may also have larger brain volumes in old age, says a study in the journal Neurology.

Brain volume decreasing is a sign of both Alzheimer's disease and normal aging.

The study tested 1,111 US women over eight years, until age 78. Those with more fatty acids at the start had a 0.7 per cent larger brain volume at the end, it found. James Pottala, of the University of South Dakota, said: "The results suggest that the effect on brain volume is the equivalent of delaying normal loss of brain cells with aging by one to two years."

The brain's memory centre, the hippocampus, was particularly affected, he said.

Dr Doug Brown, of the Alzheimer's Society, said the study was 'interesting' but warned it was 'a big leap to draw this conclusion.''

'Eating a weekly portion of salmon could halve the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis, researchers have found.

The same benefit was observed in those who ate four servings of lean fish, such as cod, haddock or tinned tuna each week. The benefit is largely attributable to the long-chain omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acid content in fish, according to the study, published in the journal Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.

Researchers collected dietary information on 32,000 women born between 1914 and 1948 who completed lifestyle surveys in 1987 and 1997.'

PROBIOTICS MAY CONQUER A COLD

Today's Good Health page (under the heading 'Probiotics May Conquer A Cold')  in the DAILY MAIL states:

'Probiotics may shorten the length of colds - and make them a less miserable experience. In a study at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in Iran, 500 volunteers took either a daily probiotic pill or a placebo for at least three months.

The bacteria used in the treatment group were Lactobacillus gasserl, Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium bifidum, all of which occur naturally in the human gut and have been shown in previous studies to boost immunity.

Researchers found that when the people on probiotics got a cold, they recovered two days more quickly and had fewer serious symptoms than those in the control group.

The researchers also found the probiotics group had higher levels of cells associated with immune system activity.'

POMEGRANATE JUICE TO SHRINK TUMORS?

Is there any proof that we can drink pomegranate juice to shrink tumors? Here's an extract from yesterday's health pages in the DAILY MAIL:

'Scientists are running trials to see how pomegranates may be used to treat prostate cancer. Previous studies suggested the fruit was beneficial, but it was not clear why. Now new research suggests chemicals in pomegranates attack cancer cells.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin found that mice given water with 500ml of pomegranate had significantly less cancer growth compared with those given only water. The study suggests powerful antioxidants, called ellagitannins, may be responsible. These are converted into compounds called urolithins in the gut, which may block cancer cell growth.

Scientists caution it is too early to say if the juice would benefit men undergoing treatment. However, patient studies have begun. At the University of California, men are drinking the juice daily for 18 months, while a study at Texas University is looking at its impact on levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA), a marker of the disease.'

There was an interesting feature on the health pages of Tuesday's Daily Mail about taking Garlic for Cholesterol. Here's an extract:

'Garlic taken regularly in capsule form may help reduce levels of 'bad' LDL cholesterol, according to a study published this month. A review of research on the benefits of garlic suggested a garlic preparation that contains at least 1.8 mg of allicin - a compound in garlic - has significant benefits.

The study, which reviewed 26 trials and was published in the journal COMPLETE NUTRITION, shows that people who took garlic supplements had lower levels of LDL cholesterol and a lower risk of heart disease.

The review compared the effects of standardised dried garlic preparations with garlic oils. However, neither product was compared with natural garlic, which is the best source of allicin. Results showed that a higher dose of allicin was present in capsule/tablet form.

Garlic has anti-inflammatory effects, and is thought to help widen arteries and reduce cholesterol build-up.'

BEE POLLEN - SUPERFOOD?

Here, under the heading How Bee Pollen Is Creating A Buzz As The New Superfood, is an extract from a recent DAILY MAIL feature:

'It may not be quite as tasty as honey. But another substance created by bees is being touted as the latest superfood. Bee pollen is collected and processed from plants as the insects carry out their vital task of pollinating plants and flowers.

It can be used in supplements or sprinkled over salads and its champions claim it has a number of health benefits. Described by devotees as nature's secret ingredient, bee pollen is now available to buy in Selfridges and is being used in salads sold at the London department store's Wonder Bar.

Bee pollen contains antioxidants, which prevent the body's cells being damaged by harmful free radicals, excessive amounts of which can lead to diseases including cancer. Independent dietician Dr Sarah Schenker agreed that bee pollen could have certain beneficial effects.

But she warned that very little research had been done on the subject. She said further tests would hopefully give scientists and nutritionists a greater understanding of how bee pollen affects humans.

"From a scientific point of view, it contains plant chemicals which can show advantageous effects in humans, though whether it has a miraculous effect is another matter," Dr Schenker said.

ALOE PROPOLIS CREME AND HAY FEVER

In a recent Daily Mail top GP Dr Martin Scurr wrote that sometimes he has to eat his hat – as he had just had to do when he heard the latest thinking on vitamin supplements.

Having attended a conference on age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is a leading cause of blindness in older people, and expected to hear a talk about Lucentis and Avastin - newly available treatments that are injected directly into the eyeball – he heard about less drastic steps that can prevent or delay the progression of the condition.

Here’s a quote from his feature: ‘This is, in part, a recognition that controlling the risk factors undoubtedly helps – that means smoking, sun exposure (wear those dark glasses), obesity and high blood pressure.

But most importantly, nutrients from three food groups have been proven to help. In particular, these are two carotenoids – lutein and zeaxanthin, found in greens, oranges, broccoli, egg yolk and some other foods.

The omega-3 essential fatty acids that we hear so much about (from oily fish and hemp oil) also help; and antioxidant vitamins A, C and E, along with added zinc, are thought to be protective.

I have always been steadfastly against people taking extra vitamins, believing we should get all we need from eating the right sort of diet. But in this case, GPs must take into account the relatively high risk of developing this condition – 50% for people who have a relation with AMD, and 12% for those who do not.

And we must also take into account that not everyone is able to incorporate these nutrients in their diets. So you can see why I am doing an about-turn and eating that hat.’
